Pop-Up Poetry: 3D Digital Storybook!

10 Mar

McKeel Elementary Academy loves our Ladibug Document Cameras! Here’s how we used them to enhance our participation in World Read Aloud Day 2011.

During the week prior to the event, 3rd-5th grade gifted students composed original poetry and designed pop-up illustrations to go with them. On World Read Aloud Day, students used Garageband to create mp3s of themselves reading their creative poems aloud. Then, we used our Ladibug 3D Document Camera to share the poems and illustrations on our interactive white board (and screen capture the images) in both 2D and 3D! Finally, the students collected the pieces into a Pop-Up Poetry anthology using iMovie… which will be shared with the whole school – and you!

This was our first time creating with the Ladibug 3D document camera and here is a snapshot of their work! My students LOVE hearing feedback from their online audience, so please let us know what you think.

Celebrating World Read Aloud Day

10 Mar

What an amazing day!! Joining LitWorld.org in the support of Global Literacy, we engaged a wide variety of read aloud activities throughout the day. Here’s an idea of some of the things our students did in our technology classes!

– Skype calls to read aloud with 1st grade class at South McKeel Elementary Academy in Lakeland, Fl, a 2nd grade class at Martin J Gottlieb Day School in Jacksonville, Fl, and two classes in Wisconsin. Thank you to their teachers, Samantha Lewis, Sylvia Tolisano, Pernille Ripp, and Susan Goneau, for being a part of this!
– A Skype call with a secret service agent who shared about his position in Washington DC and engaged us with a responsive reading about President John Adams, a poem about President Clinton’s cat, and more from the book, The White House: Looking In, Looking Out!
– An Elluminate session with Mrs. S. Lister, Canadian Ed Tech Consultant who is currently in the country, Jordan. Mrs. Lister read us The Sandwich Swap, written by Jordan’s Queen Rania!
– Premiered student-created Animated PowerPoint Storybooks based on original stories and student read aloud voice recordings!
– Created, recorded, and shared original poetry with pop-up illustrations!

Our first World Read Aloud Day experience was a great success (even with the fire alarm going off during our Elluminate session to Jordan!). The kids are more excited than ever about reading, writing… and technology. They are beginning to realize that the world is their audience and their teacher… and that their voices are worth hearing.
